According to reports, R. Kelly was hurt while incarcerated and is now attempting to use the ailment as an excuse to avoid going to New York for an impending court over his victims’ restitution.
On Thursday, September 15, Kelly’s legal team requested the judge whether the disgraced R&B singer may participate electronically in the upcoming hearing, which was set for September 28. Kelly’s leg was hurt, making it impossible for him to move about, according to records that AllHipHop acquired.
“Undersigned counsel writes to respectfully request that Defendant Kelly be permitted to appear via zoom for the September 28th, 2022, restitution hearing,” attorney Ashley Cohen wrote. “Mr. Kelly is currently housed at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Kelly has sustained an injury to his leg that makes traveling challenging and uncomfortable.”
Cohen added: “Furthermore, a significant amount of resources would have to be utilized to have Mr. Kelly flown in from Chicago to the Eastern District of New York for this hearing. For the foregoing reasons, Defendant respectfully requests that he be permitted to appear via zoom for the hearing. The government has no objection to this request.”
Unknown how Kelly hurt his leg, it happened the day after a federal jury in his hometown of Chicago found him guilty of child pornography-related counts. The “Ignition” singer is still facing criminal charges in Minnesota, which have been suspended while his federal trials, despite having previously received a 30-year prison term in New York. In Chicago, a 10 year minimum sentence is required for child pornography offenses.
R. Kelly’s court hearing in New York also comes after a New York judge ordered that $28,000 in inmate commissary earnings be taken out of the account and applied to his $140,000 in court penalties and victim restitution payments. He now
