(EP) Star2 – “Jungle 2 Streets” @starofficial

Asian-American artist and Ka-ren refugee, Star2 releases the new EP Jungle 2 Streets. The six track project features artists $tupid Young, ChinaTownRunner, LerMuDex, and RG.

Jungle 2 Streets is biographical and spans the full experience of being a refugee child to an emerging pop-rap artist. “On the Block”, “Weigh on Me” and “Tapped In” describe the street life experience of the artists. “FWM” with Asian rap pioneer $tupid Young is a club worthy anthem that leans in to the lavish and oftentimes, intense lifestyle, that comes with the territory, while “Onna Road” and “Spoil You” with Ka-ren pop artist LerMuDex completes the mosaic with romantically themed summer tracks. Star2 adds, “The album represents all of the seasons of our experience. Mixed emotions for sure – street songs, club, and romantic ballads.”

Star2 is a refugee artist from the Mae La refugee camp in Thailand. Star2’s documentary, RETURN TO KAWTHOOLEI: A Refugee Rapper’s Journey to His Homeland in Burma has been recognized by several film festivals this year, winning “Best Short Documentary” at the Malaysian Film Festival and “Outstanding Achievement Award, Short Films” at the Better Earth International Film Festival amongst many others. Recently, the documentary was selected to be screened at the International Migration & Environmental Film Festival.

Star2 and ChinaTownRunner will head back to Thailand this year to visit the nine refugee camps and work on new music with Sprite. Stay tuned for upcoming tour dates in Denver, Boise, Charlotte, Akron, Milwaukee, Fort Wayne, Tulsa and Dallas through late September.

After months of anticipation backed by three singles, we are finally gifted with the 12 piece offering of art from MeRCY. Even with some technical difficulties on the upload, nothing could stop Michaelangelo as it hits all streaming services in full force. With the transfer complete and minds at peace we can now indulge on the latest album from the craftsman MeRCY.

Michaelangelo begins on a high note with the record “Work Of Art” as it sets the tone for the rest of the album. Backed by heavy drum & snare hits, MeRCY begins to paint his picture from his heart and painful scriptures. “You don’t got bark or bite/you don’t got stars and stripes/you ain’t built for this/I’m the army type” spits the heavy hitter over the Black Metaphor production. The track begins to boost your endorphins and that cycle continues to prove true throughout Michaelangelo, MeRCY says “this project is meant to be emotionally charged. Each record was supposed to be compelling storytelling”.

With a vision in place and a mic in hand the south Florida native went to work. The sculptor compiled other artists and producers to help complete his work of art, giving them a brush so they can cement their own strokes of creativity. When asked about those moments behind the scenes MeRCY says “The creation process behind this album was almost like free falling to an empty abyss of imagination. I can feel what I want or say what I want based on the production provided. I wanted the listener to capture the essence of that.” T.F, NapsNDreds, Yoamanduh, Four Square Miles, The Musalini & P. Hall help by providing their vocals to the record. Lebanon Don, Tone Spliff, Sebb Bash, Syer, Jake One, Odd Squad, Zino, DJ Wayne Ski, Kubo , SlimRock & the previously mentioned Black Metaphor lace their imprint behind the boards.

MeRCY has always been known as a lyricist and has never fallen short of expressing his interests regarding the world of art. He combines both within Michaelangelo, bringing to life an album that brings a visual lyricism of a musical art gallery. The artist says “I wanted the people that’s listening to picture the music and see the sounds of every record.” If MeRCY turned this final project in before the end of the semester with hopes of passing he’d get an A+ for simply creating a body of work that has no faults. Instead he’s a college dropout who’s playing college dropout, he’s always been in a class of his own even before getting out. He’s an artist who doesn’t need a class or book to make his mark in life, he’s doing just that with his book of rhymes and the art that comes from it.

Backed by only one single, “S’mores & Rumchata”, D’Shaun comes crash landing at #4 onto the iTunes top 40 HipHop album chart and right back into your music libraries with CRWN. The highly anticipated project lived up to expectations on the first day of its release as it also entered yet another chart on iTunes. CRWN peaked at #88 on the top 100 albums in all genres chart, sitting comfortably and confidently above Elton John’s Diamonds. This incredible accomplishment doesn’t happen without D’Shaun and the RYLTY crew’s hard work and dedication to creating an album packed with 12 playable and enjoyable records that each bring a different sound and vibe when stimulating your brain.
D’Shaun continues to put Converse, Texas, on the map as he showcases not only his talent but the talents found within his circle. From Austria to Detroit to Houston, he credits the artists around him for helping provide the “spacey yet quintessential HipHop but with a new school sort of feel” sound that he believes his latest body of work entails. This album not only incorporates HipHop but it also throws some dashes of rap, pop and R&B, adding some more seasoning to the recipe we already knew D’Shaun brought to the table. He’s dabbled in those genres before but with CRWN he brings them altogether in a cohesive manner, letting each live and grow with one another as they flow beautifully the more and more you run the project back. For him, CRWN is set to “change the whole landscape, the city and the state, the lives of each of these young men in RYLTY”. Those changes begin with track number one titled “Nonstop” which is fitting for the vibes that you continuously find yourself emerged in. Between track one and twelve you’ll find up tempo hits meant for the radio in “Chalice”, “Notice”, “S’mores & Rumchata” and “Alright”. You’ll also hear the artist slowing things down a bit with “4U”, “LoveSICK”, “Virgo Season Interlude” and “My Way”. Pure raps are expressed within the previously mentioned “Nonstop” along with “Gentlemen’s Club”, “Sprite Zero” and “Waver”. If there was a sound that D’Shaun didn’t think was fun or didn’t fit the wave he was gearing towards then it simply didn’t make the cut, the artist says that CRWN “is more fun and shows what wearing the crown is like” when comparing the project to its predecessor KNG.
Four years separate both albums and in between those four years we’ve heard how highly D’Shaun has spoken about the trio of albums he had been planning on releasing with all being companions to one another. With two down and one to go the one man band artist has been growing and maturing within his sound and will only continue to do so. He showcases that behind each verse, chorus, ad-lib, snare, kick or high hat he decides to incorporate into this world where creativity never ends. We can call this world “RYL” and here we’ll find the king at his throne wearing a crown meant for only him, exuding royalty the only way he knows how.

Mexican/American artist, Showtime Ramon, has been on a tear as of late releasing banger after banger that include features from the likes of Mark Battles (Jet Lag) and Sir Michael Rocks (Clyde Drexler). Now the gem spitter drops his Abominable Snowman album to open up 2024 bringing along his clever word play filled with his love for pop culture, sports, cars and exotic women.
Weighing in at 10 tracks with features from Freetown (DDP) and Chuuwee (Pam Grier), Showtime enters the ring ready and willing to take on the world with his raw talent and flows filled with nitro as he continues to smackdown any competition that tries to tangle with him in a singles match. With raps like “I’m breaking barriers I’m like a Lisa Leslie dunk/I ain’t trying to hear it/I’m sparking up in a Tessie truck” and “I spit that type of dope that Stevie Nix took up her nostril/now I need a JLO with a castle that’s colossal/going worldwide I’m reaching shit that’s impossible” it’s hard not to give the artist the attention he deserves as he continues to put on for himself and the Latino people. Per usual, Showtime does a fantastic job picking and choosing production that fits him to the tee, aligning his bars perfectly with the drums, snares and bass provided to him by the cast of producers he called upon to create Abominable Snowman. In his own words the artist says “the cover art of the Abominable Snowman depicts my feeling through out the process, cold and alone on my pursuit of greatness as I improve my skill set to survive as the last of a dying breed, a rare breed. The Abominable Snowman is mythical, his actions are unknown just like my word play abilities”.
Showtime Ramon isn’t new to the rap scene as his discography features albums, EP’s and singles with over thousands of streams but this latest set of sounds could be the game changer that solidifies Ramon’s place above other artists trying to reach where he currently is. In turn separating himself even more from the crowd of regulars while he sits on a throne of his own. Showtime Ramon is the lights the camera and the action in his movie titled Abominable Snowman, in the words of Rob Van Dam, Showtime Ramon is the whole effin’ show.
