West Coast bar-spitter/community activist, Ras Ceylon, keeps his foot on the gas pedal with the unveiling of “Rebel On The Roof” featuring Sunz Of Man’s Prodigal Sunn(P. Sunn), the second single & music video from Ras’s upcoming solo album titled, “Srvnt of the Ppl” via Chalice Row Records. DJ Just Jay handles the single’s production, with a hard-hitting percussion-driven soundscape accompanied by blaxploitation-themed cuts declaring, “There is a rebel on the roof!” The two MCs, Ras Ceylon & Prodigal Sunn, felt compelled to write, record, and film this militant opus on the spot in Oakland, California. Why Oakland? Simple answer. It is the historic birthplace of The Black Panther Party which Ras Ceylon still has strong ties to this day, working with Chairman Fred Hampton Jr., of The Black Panther Party Cubs, CRC, and the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation. Displaying their solidarity with the Panther Party’s ideology of self-reliance and self-defense, the music video showcases a Dr. Huey P. Newton bronze bust sculpted by artist Dana King as a visual cornerstone. Ras Ceylon explained, “It is essential to help preserve the legacy of BPP Minister of Defense, Huey P. Newton who was known as the Supreme Servant of the People. I have made it a personal obligation to embody the same principles into my music as the freedom fighters that came before us lived by. Those principles are embedded in this song.” Prodigal Sunn added, “It is important to stand up for something with meaning. This song represents freedom, culture, family, and community empowerment.” Ras emphasizes, “We those rebels on the roof fighting for The People.”
Kalpee and fellow Caribbean musicians Rys Thompson and Kwami Morrison lit up the stage at Music Matters Live in Singapore. Island Wave is Kalpee’s label dedicated to highlighting the music of Caribbean artists on a global scale. Through the creation of Caribbean stages at music festivals such as SXSW and Music Matters, funded travel opportunities for Caribbean artists, and awareness campaigns, Kalpee hopes to bring the music of the West Indies to the forefront of the international music scene.
Kalpee’s recent performance at Music Matters in Singapore showcases the joyful, energetic, celebration that always occurs when Island Wave comes through. The recorded set captures Kalpee dancing through the audience, cheering on his electric guitarist Kwami, and offering up inspirational words of wisdom to the crowd in between tracks. Kalpee magnetizes the room with his unreleased, cathartic new single “Breathe” at the center of his set. He engages the audience by taking a deep breath together followed by a mesmerizing guitar solo from Kwami Morrison. Kalpee’s lyrics reflect his deep love for his home in Trinidad and Tobago, and desire to push Caribbean music to the surface to share the magic of the West Indies with the world. Kalpee sings, “Long days we sat by the ocean. Face up, feel the breeze on the coast.” Kalpee’s set at Music Matters in Singapore is a must-watch blissful release of global love and communal joy.
After an incredible reception in Singapore, Island Wave was offered to host the very first Caribbean stage the following year at Music Matters Live 2023. Additionally, Island Wave will return to SXSW in 2023 to host a lineup of more than 30 different Caribbean musicians. “Make A Change” is the latest single from up and coming artist, G Quick featuring Kansas artist T-Rell. Coming from East Moline, IL, G Quick’s latest release is about overcoming the problems that come along with living a fast life in the streets.
This track is not so much of a confession as it is a testament of someone who knows there’s something more than what street life has to offer, and searching for that something. “Make A Change” gives insight to the thoughts of a person that wants to right past wrongs, let go of a mentality and lifestyle that, while sounds good in the beginning, shows its ugly side in the end. The lyrics you can tell are coming from someone who knows when it’s time to evolve as a person for their family.
The T-Rell feature only enhances the song, as his hook brings a melody that compliments the Mad Chemist produced beat, while adding even more substance to G Quick’s subject matter, which can be felt by insiders and outsiders alike who know what it’s like to truly want to make a change for the better.
While I’m sure we’ll get more upbeat and turn up tracks from G Quick in the future, right now “Make A Change” is a welcome entry as he sheds what was and steps into what will be.
