According to Deadline, Wiz Khalifa has been hired as George Clinton in the forthcoming Spinning Gold film, which might be his greatest acting role yet.
In a biopic based on 1970s Casablanca Records president Neil Bogart, played by Jeremy Jordan, the Taylor Gang rapper will feature as the Parliament-Funkadelic icon. Samuel L. Jackson was originally attached to portray Wiz Khalifa’s part in June 2019, while Justin Timberlake was also attached to play Bogart as far back as 2011.
Tayla Parx as Donna Summer, Ledisi as Gladys Knight, and Jason Derulo as Ron Isley of The Isley Brothers have all started filming in New Jersey. Among the cast members are Jay Pharoah, Pink Sweat$, Michelle Monaghan, Jason Isaacs, Lyndsy Fonseca, and many others.
With Neil Bogart’s son, Timothy Scott Bogart, scripting and directing the film, the narrative is in good hands.
The soundtrack will feature new renditions of songs by Parliament, The Isley Brothers, Gladys Knight, Bill Withers, Village People, and the Edwin Hawkins Singers, as well as performances by Wiz Khalifa, Jason Derulo, Pink Sweat$, and Tayla Parx.
“Spinning Gold is about a group of people who, once upon a time, lived a fairytale and made their dreams come true, all set to some of the greatest music ever pressed in vinyl,” Timothy Scott Bogart said. “Bringing these dreamers and artists to life has been the privilege of my life. For a film about one of the greatest salesmen in the entrainment business, I am thrilled to be working with Christian, Marc and the entire team of Capstone to share this timeless story to audiences and music lovers around the world.”
Wiz Khalifa, Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, and Ty Burrell are all part of the voice cast for Fox’s animated series Duncanville, which premiered in 2020 and has since been renewed for two more seasons. In 2012, he co-starred with Snoop Dogg in the stoner comedy Mac & Devin Go to High School.
“I like being a novice at things, and learning on the job and getting better,” Wiz told NBC about his acting skills in 2011. “I would rate myself as like, a six. But you know, that’s just me being insecure — I had people tellin’ me I was a natural.”
